Qualcomm Vodafone and Thales demonstrate groundbreaking iSIM technology
Qualcomm has presented a smartphone that supports the latest generation of interconnected SIM (iSIM) technology in a huge step. Qualcomm created this technology in collaboration with Vodafone along with Thales.
According to the company, the new technology adds the features of the physical SIM card directly to the primary processor, which allows significant design modifications to chips, and “greater system integration, higher performance, and increased memory capacity.” In addition, the iSIM function will let more space on motherboards since they don’t require an additional chip, similar to eSIM.
Qualcomm, Vodafone, and Thales unveil new iSim Technology.
“iSIM technology is a significant evolution on existing eSIM solutions and delivers wholesale benefits to both consumers and telecommunications operators, further paving the way for mobile services to be integrated into devices beyond the mobile phone, taking the mobile experience to laptops, tablets, virtual reality platforms, IoT devices, wearables, and more. The iSIM is integrated into the device’s application processor bringing multiple benefits.”
The technology’s proof of Concept (POC) demonstration was held in Europe, The POC demonstrated the technology’s commercial viability and efficacy, working with existing infrastructure and leveraging Vodafone’s capabilities on the network. The fully operational demonstration device by Vodafone’s network was built upon Samsung’s Samsung Galaxy Z Flip3 5G powered by the Snapdragon 5G mobile platform called 888 that includes an integrated Qualcomm Secure Processing Unit running the Thales iSIM operating system to support this demonstration. The demonstration took place at Samsung’s R&D labs, using Vodafone’s advanced technology for remote control.
