Google’s Pixel Chip Development Delayed Until 2025 Report
According to The Information, Google is reportedly making efforts to replace Samsung with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for the development of its Tensor G5 chip.
The original plan was to introduce the first fully customized chip for Pixel phones in 2024, but a chip codenamed “Redondo” faced delays and feature cuts, leading to a handoff to TSMC earlier this year.
Google’s Switch to TSMC and Introduction of Laguna Chip
Google intends to shift from Samsung to TSMC for chip production, specifically for its Tensors. TSMC, known as the world’s largest contract chipmaker, serves major tech companies such as Apple and Nvidia. Google’s fully custom chip, named Laguna, is expected to be launched in 2025.
It will leverage TSMC’s advanced 3-nanometer manufacturing process. The Laguna chip, also referred to as Tensor G5, will incorporate Integrated Fan-Out technology, resulting in thinner dimensions and improved power efficiency.
Google has faced setbacks in its chip development journey, including the cancellation of multiple Tensor chips and the shelving of a Tensor-powered Pixelbook. The coordination challenges between the U.S. and India, where a majority of its Tensor silicon engineers are based, have contributed to these setbacks. Despite these obstacles, Google remains dedicated to creating a custom chip for its Pixel phones.
Developing custom chips allows Google to integrate its software and hardware more effectively, potentially unlocking new capabilities and efficiencies in its devices. This move aligns with the broader trend of technology companies seeking to reduce reliance on chip suppliers.
However, some industry insiders express concerns about Google’s investment in custom chips, given that Pixel has yet to achieve substantial sales volume.
