Android 13 adoption rises Android 11 still dominates
In the latest Android distribution numbers released by Google, it has been revealed that Android 13 is steadily gaining traction among users. Android 13 is currently installed on roughly 14.7% of active devices worldwide, based upon statistics gathered from devices connected to the Play Store over a seven-day period ending on May 30, 2023.
Android 11 is still the most popular version!
Even though Android 13 had an impressive jump from April’s 12.1%, Android 11 is still the most popular version, accounting for 23.1% of the market. The report also notes small decreases in Android 12, 11, and 10 usage.
Surprisingly, the only other version to climb from April to June was Android Oreo, which increased from 6.7% to 8.3%. It is worth noting, however, that this rate remained lower than the 9.5% reported in January.
The causes behind the spike in Android 13 adoption and the resurgence of Android Oreo are unknown. These patterns are most likely influenced by factors such as device compatibility, user preferences, and software updates.
Developers can use this information to make informed choices about which Android version to support when designing apps. It also compares the Android ecosystem to the iOS ecosystem, noting disparities in update rollout and device acceptance rates.
It would be interesting to see how upcoming updates and new releases impact the distribution figures as the Android ecosystem develops. Additionally, it remains to be seen whether Android 13 will eventually surpass Android 11 as the most popular version globally.
